Can the manipulation pharmacies produce phytoterapics?

Yes. The manipulation pharmacies have permission to manipulate medicines and along them the phytoterapics, but these products aren’t registered in Anvisa. A Phytoterapic can be manipulated if it is granted the right prescription or if it’s formula is in the “Farmacopéia Brasileira”, “Formulário Nacional” or in a similar statement.

What are the phytoterapics?

Many similar products, massively crafted, are made exclusively of active matters, intended to interact with live beings in order to diagnose, stop or prevent diseases and disorders bringing a benefit to the user. They are classified by the knowloge of their effects and risks and by their quality. Although farmaceutic substances may be included in their preparation ( allowed by the legislation ), products that present in their formulae active substances from sources other than the ones from the original medicine - even if natural, found isolated or mixed - are NOT considered phytoterapics products.

How to use the phytotherapics:

The use of the medicinal plants, nowadays, is considered such as the “allopathic”(regular medicine). They are used directly against symptoms and causes of the diseases, instead of the homeopathy that has it’s own system of dilution of the medicines, that can cause symptoms similar as those of the disease.

If the phytoterapics active substance is separated from the rest of the medicine, they will lose their efficiency, even if combined with different substances.

Bath: the part of the body affected is washed with the liquid of the tea.

Compress: the herbs are put over the skin affected by the disease.

Decoction: the herbs are cooked with a low-fire.

Extract: the active substances are taken and used directly in the body.

Bottled: plants used in alcoholic beverages bottles in order to the medicine production.

Inhalation: the herbs are boiled and the vapor is inhalated.

Infusion: when boiled water is turned over the herb.

Powder: the plant is crushed and becomes a thin powder.

Suppository: The extract of the plants is mixed with vaseline and cocoa butter and used through the anus.

Syrup: The extract of the plant is mixed with honey.

In our country the phytoterapy is a mix of many races and climates, from our colonizers, native animals and vegetation. The characteristics of the other regions are named by the experts subsystems, such as these:

European: The portuguese colonization is much present in the south of Brazil. Examples of their influence are the "Erva Cidreira" and "Erva Doce"

African: Through the religious rituals of the slaves, herbs as "Arruda", "Jambolão", and "Mangueira" are used, mostly at Bahia.

Eastern: Through the chinese and japanese imigrants, mainly in São Paulo, there is "Gengibre", "Lechia" and "Raiz Forte".

Indian: An inheritage of the old owners of

Brazil

, we have "Caapeba", "Abajeru" and "Urucum", in almost all of the country territory

Are they as efficient as common medicines?

Yes. The difference is how these products act. In the common medicine the active substance supposed to reduce the symptoms and the heal of the disease is known and isolated in order to craft the ideal formula, while in the phytoterapic it works interacting with the other substances of the plant. The regular medicines act faster, fix the problem and are the best option for quick disorders, as a fever. The drugs made of plants act slower and less toxic, stopping the side effects and are intended for the treatment of cronic diseases.

Does it require medical prescription?

Since they are considered medicine in Brazil, they obey a specific legislation, being under the watch of the Nacional Sanitary Vigilancy Agency(ANVISA, in Portuguese). The company needs to prove the safety and efficiency of each drug before it is registrated. Only doctors are allowed to recommend the plant and formula intended for each problem. Nevertheless, some products, due to it's red brand, can only be sold due to a prescription.

PS: In the USA, they are still in the list of feed supplement, sharing the category with vitamins, and can be consumed without restriction.
